Notes for Cornelius A. "Neal" (Spouse 1)
At the time of his brother Allison’s death he was living in Carrollton, Texas.1043,1042

It has been stated that the Smith family moved from Tennessee to Texas in 1872. William Dell Smith, son of C. A. and Martha Jane Smith, told the story that C. A. and A. J. Smith arrived in Texas and first settled in Detroit, Red River County, Texas, then at an unknown date moved to a rural area to farm in Denton County, Texas. The Smith farm in Denton County was located in the area what is now known and close to Frankford Road and Old Denton Road. It now consists of a shopping center, commercial buildings and residential homes. At a later date, C. A. Smith moved to a small farm in Carrollton, Dallas County, Texas. The samll farm was located at 1500 Denton Drive, a block from the three major railroads, and close to the old downtown Carrollton. his home was sold in 1977 and restored, a few years later it was destroyed by fire, and it now consists of five homes built on said property.

Cornelius was a farmer and raised Morgan horses due to their large size and good-farming capability.

His wife died on November 12, 1884. She most likely passed away from complications after giving birth to their youngest child, a daughter named Engene (Jenny) Smith, born October 2 1884.

A year later, Mr. Smith married Laura Isom on November 2, 1885. They had no children, but she became the mother to his four children.

C. A. and Laura also helped raise a granddaughter, Jennie Eugene Smith (daughter of Edward Chalmer Smith and Alto Busy Skelton Smith). Jennie was born November 26, 1900, and her mother passed away shortly thereafter.

C. A. was very supportive in the 1884 establishment of the Furnearux Cemetery, located at Cemetery Hill. This cemetery was very close to the Smith farm in Denton Coutny (it is located off Rosemead Parkway between Old Denton Road and Josey Lane). William Furneaux donated the land and sold lots for $10.00 each. C. A. Smith purchased quite a few lots as did the Morgans, Jacksons, Lords, and a few other families.

Cornelius A. (Neal) Smith passed aways on January 31, 1930. His son, William Dell Smith, and his wife moved into the home at 1500 Denton Drive to assist on the farm and help take care of C. A. SMith's wife, Laura Isom Smith, until her death on December 20, 1944.

Note: Keenan Cemetery was established in 1843; Furneaux Cemetery in 1884; and Petty Cemetery in 1897.972
