Verna Lee died of the flu complicated by pneumonia. She was a deaf mute from the age of 5 years-old after she contracted Scarlet Fever.467 In 1925 she was sent to the Morganton Deaf School to live until she graduated. She visited her cousins Lena and Naomi Baker Howell at Grassy Creek, North Carolina during the summers.
